Welcome from the Chair of IEB
Re: Headteacher Vacancy, L14-21 (£51,614 - £61,288) & 20% discretionary payment
Thank you for your interest in the Headteacher post currently being advertised at St Alban’s Catholic Primary School. I thought it might be useful to provide you with a context of our community to help you decide whether or not ours is a school in which you could be happy, contribute and thrive.
St Alban’s is a voluntary aided Catholic primary school which serves the South-east Cardiff communities of Tremorfa and Splott. The school is situated in an area of high level of social deprivation with nearly half of the pupils entitled to free school meals. Around 25% of pupils are identified as having an additional learning need and a growing number of pupils speak English as an additional language.
In January 2012 Welsh Government Education Minister, Leighton Andrews, sanctioned the appointment of an Interim Executive Board (IEB) to lead St Alban’s following a disappointing Estyn inspection where the school was placed in “Special Measures”. The IEB, which replaces a governing body, is the first of its kind in Wales but comprises a team of experts who are fully committed to ensuring the school improves.
In the short time since it has been together there have been a number of significant changes to the school, most notably to the staffing profile at all levels of the school structure. In April 2012 the IEB appointed two Assistant Headteachers to support the strategic leadership of the school. Both bring a broad and balanced skills’ set and have made an immediate impact. A highly motivated teacher has also been appointed to work in the Foundation Phase bringing to the school proven good practice and a determination to raise the standards.
When Estyn visited the school in the summer term of 2012 inspectors highlighted a number of areas where there had been significant improvement. While we are pleased with this the IEB is continuing to work with our Interim Head to address further the recommendations identified by Estyn.
As a school in “Special Measures” the IEB is seeking to recruit an individual with the ambition and experience to transform our school into a centre of excellence with the pupils being the main beneficiaries. Ultimately, our aim is to make St Alban’s one of the leading schools in Cardiff. In achieving this aim we will do all that is necessary and leave no stone unturned in pursuit of our goals. Given the present circumstances and the need for rapid improvements the IEB has increased the Individual School Range to ensure that we attract a high quality candidate with the skills’ set to bring about the necessary change. Furthermore, we are also willing to offer a substantive recruitment and retention allowance for an exceptional candidate.
Full details of the recruitment timeline, application process and visits to the school can be found on the ‘How to apply’ page within this micro-site. Prospective candidates can also speak confidentially with Adam Stanley (Independent Recruitment Adviser) on 07778 819105.
We truly believe that St Alban’s has the potential to become an outstanding Catholic school over the next few years. If you are excited by the prospect of playing a key role in helping us achieve this and have a core belief that all pupils can achieve regardless of ability or background then we would very much like to hear from you!
